Your Social Action
Since all of you have (hopefully) begun working on social action projects by now you should be able to tell us about what your topic is and what you're doing. This is an opportunity to get your classmates interested and, potentially, get them to help you out if your cause is something you need audience participation for. As usual, 250 word post up by Thursday night (04/21) and 100 word response up by Sunday night (04/24).
The topic of my MIOP involves the effects of video games. For my social civic project I have decided to make a survey that asks a couple questions involving topics I mention in my paper. I have posted the link to my facebook in order to have a wide range of people available to answer the questions. It is only a five-question survey and goes over the basis of my essay. I feel doing a survey will help me get a different incite on how people view the topic. The survey allows me to also compare what people say to the research that I have done. When writing my essay I have chosen the positive side of video games. So making the survey allows me to see who agrees or disagrees with my view of the topic. For the social civic project I will also include some type of video or blog. I really like the website we were shown today in class called Prezi. It looks like a fun different way to show your information instead of just doing a PowerPoint. I also may look into making my own type of YouTube video that involves different video clips of games and comments to go along with it. Since I am writing my essay in Rogerian form I want to be able to share my information in a more neutral form and still share both side of the argument. I think if I go that route it will better mesh with the style of writing I picked.

For my social action project I organized a Luminaria ceremony and gave a speech at UT’s Relay For Life. Relay was this past weekend and I hope all of you were able to come by. I was the Luminaria chair on the committee this year and it was really amazing to be apart of something so big. We raised enough money to surpass our $65,000 goal and it was an awesome experience. Giving the speech was nerve racking but I think it went well. I was nervous because I had completely lost my voice last week and it’s just now going back to normal. So I probably sounded off Friday night but I got through the whole thing without having to cough, which was an accomplishment in itself. In my speech I spoke about the people who we relay for. For the survivors and the ones who lost their battle to cancer, but also to the medical professionals and caregivers who stuck with cancer patients throughout their struggle. My goal was to raise awareness to those people who deserve a ceremony in their honor and a night to celebrate their lives. With my partner, I organized the Luminaria ceremony so people could honor and/or remember their loved ones. There were tears but it’s all part of the healing process. Overall giving the speech, organizing the ceremony and being on the committee was extremely rewarding, and as a social action I hope I impacted those at Relay by giving them a chance to understand what a cancer patient and their caregivers and doctors undertake, as well as an opportunity to light a candle in honor or remembrance of a loved one.

ReplyDeleteI was at Relay for Life this past weekend and I think you did great giving your speech. You were composed and you were able to raise awareness for the real reason why we do Relay for Life. The point you brought up about celebrating the people who not only have had cancer or are currently dealing with cancer but also the caregivers was really interesting. I had never taken the time to think about all the people that suffered along with the patients. Relay for Life has been an important event in my life because of the people in my family that have been affected by cancer. I am glad that all of the people that attended were able to walk for that cause together.
My social action project has been something that I had been dwelling on for a long time because I could not figure out what to do. My topic that I am exploring is the negative impact that technology has on our society and also incorporates how we see technology as almost a status symbol. I wrote a lot about the impact that technology has on family, in the workplace, and in relationships. I stated both sides of the argument but I put heavy emphasis on the negative aspects with research. I thought it would be dumb if I decided to do something on the internet because that just points out my individual dependence on technology. I know that as college students we are almost required to be connected to our technological devices 24/7 so I am trying to break past that. I really wanted to do a survey including questions about how many different devices people have, how much time they spend on them, have they seen any changes in the way their relationships work because of texting/email/ect. So most likely I will do a written form of that and hand it out to people that I know so that I can get them back easily. I also want to do a second part that allows me to reach a broader audience. I plan on making a poster or fliers to put up around the school that ask people to see how long they can go without all of their technology and to take some time to put all of their devices down and enjoy the things around them. Ideas anyone???? I need help!

ReplyDeleteIs the topic of your MIOP paper Luminaria? I think that is so amazing that you were able to complete a social action project that is so important. I think it is a wonderful accomplishment to give a speech in front of all those people. I do not think that I would have been able to get up in front of a huge crowd and talk about such an important topic. It is great how you want to raise awareness and how you are the chair of the Luminari committee. Your social civic project seems like it was an amazing way to show off your topic and to do something very important for the community and raise awareness to others. I was unable to go to Relay For Life but I’m sure it would have been great to see your speech if I would have been their.
My topic for the MIOP is based on whether Whistleblowers, people who have spoken out against unethical actions occurring in corporations and by individuals, should be considered heroes or a burden. It is generally considerably to have a balance for both sides since either applies. I am thinking about focusing my presentation in relations to the public views on whether Whistleblowers are heroes or a burden and to incorporate some experience based from volunteering at numerous non-profit organizations. If you think about it, majority of the scandals that occur happen to the non-profits because they basically rely on the donations of individuals and grants from the government. They cannot defend themselves from the corporate hounds in court and suffer the negative publicity projected on their organization. They are at the mercy of the government. I may consider conducting an online survey for the students at UT to answer in regards if they would take part in a scandal on campus or something close to that term and if they would speak up against it. A part of UT’s main policy is academic integrity so I believe that many students would be as honest as possible in regards to their academics and the risk of being dismissed from the University. That is part of what I may talk about for my presentation in class. In regards to my MIOP paper, I emphasized on the negative and positive aspects of being a Whistleblower and if the outcome of both is really work it in the long-run.

ReplyDeleteI attended Relay for Life this year as a representative of the PEACE Volunteer Center at the University of Tampa. Your speech was very thoughtful and touched many people that night. Many of my friends and co-workers were in tears while you spoke. I was too. It can be tough situation to know that you are diagnosed with cancer and may have only a few months to live. I am glad that you helped to conduct the Luminaria ceremony and used it for your social action because it made the students reach out to one another for support as we all went through that difficult period.
My major is film so I chose a topic that I was really interested in with in film. The rise of women in film. For my social action I want to get people involved in knowing what women do in the film industry. I made a trailer of different women in action movies to show that women now have a lot of main roles with action. I made a quiz to test people’s knowledge on whether they know the history of women in film. After they submit their answers it reveals the right answer so hopefully they learn something. I also added the trailer I made at the end of the quiz. To get people involved in my quiz I sent messages to a lot of my friends on facebook asking them to take the quiz. Some have responded and taken the quiz others didn’t respond. The people that did take the quiz have told me it was hard some say it was easy. I am going to look at the differences in men and women grades and compare them. Hopefully there is a correlation. I feel like more women would do better on the quiz since the category is about them rising in the film industry. I know there are a lot of women who search and find the first woman everything. I can’t force people to take the quiz but I am hoping they will. If any of you want to take the quiz here is the link http://apps.facebook.com/quizzes/quiz.php?id=8482888

ReplyDeleteI think surveys are always great. They let you know exactly how people feel about a certain topic. You will have many different views on your topic because there are so many people who play video games and almost a same amount of people who are against the violence in video games. I personally like video games and don’t see the problem with them as long as people know its just a game not real life and you cant do the things you do in a game in real life. A rogerian argument is good for your topic but hard. I hope it turns out good.
For my MIOP, I decided to discuss Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as Mr. Breckenridge suggested. Recently, a new version has been published in which the word “nigger” is replaced by the word “slave” and this has caused a lot of debate; some say it serves an injustice to Twain because he wouldn’t want his work altered, while others claim to be doing a favor for those who find discomfort in the constant inclusion of the word. For the social aspect, I created a clip on YouTube in which I discuss my belief on the matter, and include clips from three other students here at UT. In asking for their assistance, I was careful not to guide them in any direction when asking what they thought of the book and its censorship, and received pretty good results. To promote this, I put the link on my Facebook page, sent it to some friends, and posted it on other’s walls. At first, I found it somewhat difficult to post a video like this because I thought there would be a lot of negativity towards it due to the fact that “the n-word” is such a sensitive term. However, I have received very little reaction to the video besides one “like” from one of the people I included, but I will continue to work at it.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone cares to comment, feel free to find me on Facebook or watch the clip for yourself :)

To Rees:
ReplyDeleteYour topic sounds very interesting and I would like to see the video clip you’ve created. I feel as if many people do not realize how often women appear in action movies, much less how often they star in them. However, I’m not sure that women would necessarily score better on your quiz just because they are women. Men are often drawn to action movies more often than women, especially if the star is an attractive female in very little clothing. Just something to consider though while working on your paper. Best of luck!
To Carissa Cullum,
ReplyDeleteYour idea is very unique. I liked how you took into consideration the other person’s opinions and did not make your social action project biased. The people you chose to put in your video seemed very knowledgeable on the topic and formed their opinions without slaughtering the other side of the argument. You also used a very diverse group of people who can relate to this topic which I thought strengthened your point. I think you are right when saying that society now accepts that word. The man at the end even said that we hear it daily and to take it out now is almost pointless. It would lessen the value of the story and the culture of that time period. Overall, very interesting topic!
My major is marine biology and I know that at some point I want to study whales. However, last semester I did a twelve page research paper on illegal whaling last semester so I did not want to repeat that whole paper as an argument. For my MIOP topic I chose to argue against fisheries by-catch. This issue causes huge declines in species and can be prevented by simple fishing tactics. Initially I was not sure what to do for my social action. There are not that many websites discussing this topic, but it is out there. I knew a Youtube video was out of the question because I am very technologically illiterate so I decided on an active project. I made very simple flyers that are short and sweet, but get the point across. They simply say “Reduce By-catch” and have an image of a sea turtle caught in a net. I printed out about thirty of these flyers. On Friday and Saturday I plan on handing them out when I am off campus. I also plan on being one of those annoying people who put flyers on cars. Although my flyers are somewhat small, I still feel that they will have an impact on people, especially those who are animal lovers. It may not inspire people to go out and donate to the cause, but it might encourage them to learn about what by-catch is. From there, they can pass the word on how detrimental it is to many sea creatures.
ReplyDeleteMy social action project has to do with contacting the governor of New Jersey. I have started, and restarted, a letter to him multiple times about the cut-backs in Education that have been going on in New Jersey. I take these cut-backs quite personally because I want to teach in New Jersey as soon as I get a license to teach. I want to write to governor Christie to explain from a personal perspective the reason his cut-backs are not only a bad idea, but they're wrong.
ReplyDeleteIn my letter I plan on starting with a short story for the recipient. I don't want to come off too young, or too old while I'm writing. I want to present the fact that I've wanted to be a teacher since I was in fourth grade, and I have never changed my mind. Now that all the cutbacks are happening in salary and to school programs, I am now second guessing my career choice. We literally go from over nine years of wanting to do something to suddenly reconsidering due to cutbacks.
It's unfortunate, but this happens to be the case for a lot of current college students in New Jersey. It isn't fair to cutback teachers pay, make them sign pay freezes, and continue to lay off teachers. When you do all these things, the education system suffers, and I plan to address this in my letter.
I also want to bring up an article I read that said even though his teachers from high school didn't agree with what he was doing, they were still proud of him. I want to present to him what kind of people teachers are. They are forgiving, and they truly care about their students, past, present, and future. And I would like to point out that he's hurting these very same people who are proud of him.
To Carissa C:
ReplyDeleteYour topic choice seems pretty original to me, so I think you’ll be able to catch a lot of people’s attention when you promote it. When people see the same old thing over and over again, it’s boring so they could care less and skim right over it without looking twice. In my opinion, your topic is fresh and unique; it caught my attention right away. Anyway, I’ve done a lot with my social action as well, so I understand where you’re coming from about not getting very many reactions to your video. I’m getting frustrated with it too. I attempted to use cupcakes as an incentive to make others watch my presentation, which more importantly will make them care more about the issue.
I’ll check yours out though, and let you know if I can think of anything that may help ☺

ReplyDeleteMy social action project is going to be on helping out and spreading awareness of childhood obesity. This has become a serious issue in not only American society, but spreading worldwide as a global epidemic. I am working with PETA on this project (yes I know what you are thinking). This is not PETA or myself trying to show you horrific images of slaughtered animals or animal rights. PETA has designed a contract (petition) trying to help people understand how childhood obesity is a major issue. The petition is saying that you agree that schools should provide healthier choices in cafeterias rather than the usual hamburger, fries and pop. I am spreading around this petition and the video that goes along with it to anyone who believes that obesity is a serious issue. Signing this petition does not mean you support PETA in any way, shape or form, only that you want to change the way children see food. After I have my goal of signatures I will send in the petition to PETA who will try to get it passed that schools start to serve healthier choices. Not saying that this is the end all be all of childhood obesity. It takes a lot of aspects to try and change the way a child sees food. Obviously they still might have unhealthy choices in schools, but it up to the parents to try to influence them to eat healthier choices and healthier lifestyles

ReplyDeleteFor my social action project, I am targeting the issue regarding how the media affects body image. I feel that this is an issue effects not only individuals, but also society as a whole. As I stated in my IHOP, “whether it is through print, television or the runway, images of women with bodies that closely resemble those of Barbie dolls are used as key marketing ploys to persuade the public that this image is what the true meaning of beauty is.” I feel that society has lost the ability to judge true beauty for itself due to the media’s constant bombardment of set beauty standards.
ReplyDeleteThese days, people seem to be obsessed with trying to have the “perfect” body. This unhealthy obsession has lead to eating disorders and reliance on extreme weight loss methods such as diet pills, laxatives, diuretics, and surgery. Yes, the short-term results are seen quickly with the use of these rapid weight-loss methods, but the long-term effects can be deadly.
With this being said, for my social action project, I have decided to create a flyer with images and facts concerning body image and the negative effects the media is having on it. I chose the form of a flyer to convey my message as I feel that it is a quick and convenient read for the audience. I also am able to spread flyers to a wide variety of people, who will all have their own opinions about the topic. I feel that my message is one that will “hit home” with many.
For my social action part of the MIOP I am going to pass out flyers to my fellow peers here at the University of Tampa. Since my paper is on the Production and Sale of Cigarettes Should be Banned, hopefully I will get a good reaction from my audience. This reaction should lead more people to quit this disgusting habit once they are informed all of the negative aspects that come with smoking a cigarette. TO inform more individuals, I am going to also create a facebook page and try to reach out and help people to quit before it is too late. After researching I have found that a lot of people start smoking people they see it being advertised with a skinny model, or maybe their favorite actor, or actress portraying a certain “look”, that people may believe is a cool habit. However, as many of you are educated on all the effects that a cigarette can have on an individual, why do people continue to do this appalling habit? Incase people forgot about all of the harmful ingredients that are in a cigarette I am going to list them all. Cigarettes have more then 4,000 ingredients, other than tobacco, that smokers should be extremely concerned about. A few examples are methanol used for rocket fuel; ammoniac, a type of detergent, and arsenic, a lethal poison. After reading the information that I post on this flyer hopefully it will make people think again before smoking another cigarette.
ReplyDeleteThe topic of my MIOP is, are athletes overpaid? A lot of people would say yes, because they don’t think they deserve getting paid millions of dollars for simply playing a game, while other people, such as teachers, policeman, and firefighters don’t get paid nearly as much. In my introduction to sport management class that I am currently taking, we’ve talked about this issue, and why it is that athletes have such high salaries. This is a topic that has really interested me. I have done a lot of research on job markets and revenue, and found some really good statistics that prove why athletes are not overpaid.
ReplyDeleteSince this is not a glaring issue that is necessarily a huge problem in the world, it was hard for me to decide what I should do for my social action project. Unlike topics such as animal cruelty, for example, that have organizations related to their issue, my topic does not allow me to get involved with an organization and volunteer. I have been asking my friends whether they think athletes are overpaid, and most of them have said yes. So, I have decided the best thing to do is make flyers that show some of the statistics I found; using graphs and charts, and hand them out around campus. Hopefully, this will get the word out and open some people’s eyes as to why athletes are paid such high salaries, and change some people’s opinions. My goal is to provide people with facts that support my opinion.
I'm a psychology major so for the MIOP I decided to write about whether talk therapy is better or more effective than medicating patients. With a topic like this it is very hard to say what side people agree with because everyone has their own opinion at hand. I know I personally argued that there should be more talk therapy happening because it allows patients to really express what is going on in their lives without being hindered by any drugs or such affecting them.
ReplyDeleteWith that being said, it's really hard to know who goes for therapy and who doesn't on campus and I think it's inappropriate to go to the health center and ask so for my social action project I made a survey. I basically made an online survey asking a few simple questions asking people's opinion about therapy and medication. I sent it out through email to a bunch of different people. The results I have recieved so far are quite interesting.
To start off with, I really had zero idea on what to write on. Since I don’t have a major yet so I somehow eventually settled on the Confederate Flag controversy. This deals with whether or not the confederate flag should be viewed as a symbol of pride and as a symbol of racism. I argued that it should be something that should be seen a just a symbol of southern pride, or a way to honor the veterans. The hard part of choosing a social action was that my topic is not something that people like to discuss. Since it is such a touchy subject I couldn’t really figure out what to do for my social action. One thing that Mr.Breckenridge suggested was to make a Facebook page. I think that was the best idea since I couldn’t think of any so that’s what I decided to do. I haven’t gotten many people to join it because most of the people I know look at it as a racist symbol. On a good note, I created a poll for people to take and I’ve gotten way more attention on that. Two of my friends even got into a big debate over it and that was 40 comments on its own. Their discussion gave me different point of views on the subject and gave me more to write about in my paper. If anyone else wants to express how they feel about the flag you are more than welcome take the poll.

@ Craig
ReplyDeleteI really like the topic that you chose because it’s not something that many people focus on. A lot of people just think they get paid too much and don’t think why they get paid what they do. No one takes it into consideration that as professional athletes you put a major strain on your body, which could result in a whole bunch of problems later in life. Also when you look at how much money the teams bring in from fans and such the amount they get paid is definitely justified. I think your fliers will bring up a lot of talk between students and definitely change some minds.
My MIOP was is based on a topic I have been working on all semester. It has been over the debate between creationism and evolution. While it is a pretty broad argument with which I have a lot to say about, I felt my social action plan would not be best suited to be on this topic. My social action plan is over the gulf oil spill. As some of you may know, the one year anniversary for the Bp oil spill was exactly a year ago, yesterday. Leading up to this anniversary scientist have seen a gradual increase in loss of life (Sea turtles, dolphins, shorebirds, invertebrates, etc.), and a continual destruction of surrounding ecosystems in and around the gulf. To add insult to injury, congress is in the process of renewing drilling contracts in the gulf as well as creating new ones. There is still far too many unanswered questions on the affect the spill has had, what the dispersants have done to the ecosystem, and the long term affects this has on local and global ecosystems and the environment. In response to this action, I wrote a letter to our senator, Bill Nelson. I urged him to ask congress to keep a hold on oil contracts and stop new drilling contracts in the gulf from going through until we have a clearer picture of what the Bp spill has done to our gulf. I know my letter may be a fruitless effort alone, but the more letters sent to our representatives, the bigger the impact they have. I encourage anyone interested in the well being of our environment to write a letter as well. Please comment on this post if you have any further questions regarding this matter.
ReplyDeleteFor the MIOP we were supposed to pick a topic closely related to our major and since I am a nursing major I wanted to pick something health related. For a couple of years now the topic of fast food affecting someones health has always interested me. McDonald’s is a popular restaurant among this controversy but I wanted to write about something more specific with this dilemma. For my paper I am writing about how fast food is a main factor in childhood obesity and that the toys in Happy Meals are the culprits. Childhood obesity is on the rise and for a fast food kids meal to have a huge impact on it should be made aware to everyone, including the parents or guardians providing their children with such an unhealthy meal. For my social action plan I intended on spreading the awareness of this topic over Facebook. Facebook has grown with the population and more and more people use it everyday. I feel if I get the awareness out about how the toys in a Happy Meal lures a child in to make them want and eat an artery clogging meal, maybe McDonald’s will soon ban the toys in their meals. There has already been attempts to stop the sales of toys in the meals in San Diego and those have succeeded so maybe if other cities stopped the toys in their meals the percent of obese children will drop and the kids will have a longer healthier life. I will soon post the link for the Facebook Page once it is up and running perfect for anyone who wants to support my idea.
ReplyDeleteI am an exercise science major, so my topic for my MIOP is steroid use. In my paper, I prove how much steroids negatively affect someone in more ways than most think with scientific facts and personal stories from professional athletes as well as normal people who just love to work out. For my social action component I made a video and posted it to YouTube. My goal with this video was to compile clips that I have seen in the past of athletes and every day people doing amazing things. These athletes have incredible skill; the clips I included show them demonstrating their expertise in their craft. The message I wanted to get across in this video is how true talent and skill doesn’t come from using steroids. Hopefully anyone considering using steroids can watch this video and change their mind. Even though people start to use steroids to become stronger, my video shows how that is not the case either. The athletes portrayed in the video did not obtain any of the strength they show in the video from steroids. It all starts from talent and hard work. For example, I put in a clip of a 12 year old basketball prodigy- there is no way a 12 year old is taking steroids, and what he can do at age 12 is incredible. You can tell he will become a pro basketball player some day. I also included part on an interview with Hulk Hogan. I thought this would add to my video because he used to take steroids. He helps to further more enforce the effects of steroids and the prevalence of them in all sports. He states in the interview how he regrets taking them and how thankful he is that others are becoming more educated on steroids. I have been sending the link to everyone I know and they are then forwarding it to their family and friends, which has helped to successfully get it out there.

ReplyDeleteI just watched your video and I was really impressed. It was entertaining and you got your point across. That 12-year-old playing basketball was ridiculous and I think it was perfect to show such raw talent. The use of steroids is a good topic for your MIOP because everyone has heard it on the news and they affect almost all sports fans, especially when they see a news article about their favorite player getting caught with them. It makes you lose respect for the player and you question their passion for the game. Concerning your video I that highlighting people’s pure talent was key to proving what people are capable of without steroids. Also, using various sports was a smart idea because it appeals to a wider audience. Great job on your project, and good luck on your presentation!
To Ashley Bernstein,
ReplyDeleteYour idea sounds really cool and I'm interested to see your results. It sounds like a topic that could be really interesting if the research is done properly. My only problem with topics like that is that some people tend to make them one-sided to fit their argument. If your research on the topic is well-done and fair to both sides, then it becomes really interesting to read. The other thing is that you have to get enough people to respond to the survey. Hopefully, you were able to get it out to most of the students on campus and were able to get honest response to them. I wish you luck in getting unbiased results and a good research base for your topic
Amber myer,
ReplyDeleteI think that is really remarkable that you raised over 63,000 for rely for life. The whole concept of walking for those who lost their battle to cancer, and for the medical professionals and caregivers that stuck by their sides through such tough times. I think that by giving your speech you definitely raised awareness to those around you, and touched a lot of lives. It is a rewarding experience, I can imagine and I wish I was able to take part in the ceremony, hopefully next year I will be able to attend this extraordinary event.
To Amber Myer,
ReplyDeleteI was as well at Relay For Life and the event was truely amazing. It was an honor to be present there and be part of something were we could raise money in honor cancer patients and survivors. There was definitely a good turn out and snaps to exceeding UT's goal. Your speech was beautiful and I couldn't even tell you were nervous or had a lose of voice. I hope next year will be just as good and that you give a speech again!
afortunato,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a topic that has a very specific presence in modern culture. We are continually reading about and seeing with our own eyes the perils of an unhealthy diet in the U.S. I think it is certainly a topic that could always use more attention and I think your social action will assist in getting the word out there. While I agree fully with you on this issue being a problem for many american's, today. Have you considered a correlation between the economy and a rise in this type of diet? I think a major reason we are seeing this as big a problem as it is, is due to the fact it is cheap and quick. It is potentially an ideal meal option for poor families that may not have the means or the time to prepare a meal rich in nutrients. Time, may be a factor if these families are forced to work an excess of hours to met their financial needs. Again, great social action choice. I would like to recommend a documentary that you might enjoy. It's called, Food Inc. If you haven't seen it yet, I think you should watch it. I think you can view it instantly through Netflix. It touches on the downfall of our food as a whole but it also touches on different socioeconomic reasons for these poor dietary choices.
To Brittany Ives:
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you felt about not knowing what to do with your topic. Mine is also somewhat of a touchy subject that people do not like to discuss, so I decided to do the same thing you did. I’m having a kind of hard time getting people to like my Facebook page, and I’ve done everything short of pay to advertise it on the website to get people to like it. If you have any ideas that worked for you, please let me know. My poll is also doing a lot better than the page itself – about 80 votes already. I just wish there was some way to get people interested enough to try to learn more.
In response to Amber F:
ReplyDeleteI think that your Social Action Project was very well thought out. The survey idea is a good one as it causes your intended audience to become directly involved with your cause. Also, creating a video on YouTube, for example, is a good way of presenting your issue. It is a form of communication that reaches a wide variety of users.
I agree with you for the most part that videogames have positive effects on the user. Obviously there are violent games out there, but it is up to parents and guardians to restrict their children from playing them.
To: jsweez92
ReplyDeleteI think your social action project is very good. I am a public health major and understand the importance of how people shouldn’t be taking steroids. I think that you are promoting a good message because you are showing clips of people who really did succeed without the use of any steroids. I think a good point to add would be to show people who have used it and the results of when they get off of the steroids or the one man who got a growth in his arm while on steroids and then tried to cut it out himself. It is really nasty but it shows people the true side of steroids.

ReplyDeleteYour topic about how steroids negatively affects someone in more ways than good is something great to look into with your major. I watched your Youtube video you had put together and it was done very well. It’s amazing the talent people can have without having to “enhance” their abilities by steroids. The whole three minutes of the clip was brought together by the end interview of Hulk Hogan discussing how he regrets ever using steroids. I think people who use steroids are weak people, physically and psychologically. If you need to take an illegal supplement to make you “better” at a sport, you should not be participating in the sport at all.

ReplyDeleteI think that the message of steroid usage is really important to look at due to the negative impacts that it creates. I've seen first hand what steroids can do to a person, and it's not pretty. After watching the video that you put up, I agree that the twelve year old basketball prodigy is amazing. I'm glad that he plans on doing thing the clean way. Personally, just like the caption to the video says, I believe that using steroids is cheating. I think that it facilitates athletes who don't want to work as hard for natural results. That isn't talent.
I think your topic is very interesting because there really isn’t a right or wrong answer. It is also very relevant, as the debate has been in the news recently. I’m sure that a mix between talk therapy and medicinal therapy would be ideal, but there are always other factors and some people might respond better to different types of treatment. Also, money comes into the situation as not all people can afford getting help. However, I do agree with you and think talk therapy is better because you avoid all of the side effects of medicine and the risk of addiction.

For the social action project, I made a petition. My petition was made to enlighten people about the basic effects of music piracy on the internet. I’m terrible with computers, and didn’t want to use facebook or prezi for my project, so I just went old school and made a paper document. I used some facts and figures about music piracy on the internet, and received fifty signatures for the petition. The petition read that each person would, “try their best to educate and share with others the basic consequences of downloading music illegally off of the internet.” I used this in the petition, because I felt even if the person had downloaded music before (99% of the people were college students, and downloading music illegally is popular for this age group) the facts about illegal downloading would pass through their minds in the future. I thought that if I was too aggressive about the issue, no one would listen anyway and my point wouldn’t get across.

ReplyDeleteI liked your topic a lot. The videos you chose for your presentation showed the authentic skills that people have without using steroids. You also used people like Hulk Hogan in your video, a competitive wrestler who can give a lot of credibility to your stance on the issue. One thing I don’t really remember from the presentation was you having factual information, but then again I could see that the emphasis of the video was people with real skill. Overall, the video was interesting to watch and I enjoyed your presentation.
