I'm giving you an easy one this week, talk about a favorite hobby of yours and argue for why someone who hasn't tried it before would want to try it out. Make sure your grandmother would approve. As usual, 250 word post up by Thursday night (04/07) and 100 word response up by Sunday night (04/10).
As many of you may know I am a film major. My hobby might not be as interesting to others as it is to me. I love to watch movie trailers; it doesn’t matter what genre. I will sit down for hours watching movie trailers. I can watch movie trailers hundreds of times, even after they have left theaters and are on DVD. I am fascinated with them because I like to analyze them and see which scenes they chose from the movie. See how they decided to portray the movie and see what clips they mixed together with different voices. Sometimes in movie trailers they will mix clips and different voiceovers together and create a new version of the clip. They also take different clips to create a love story for a particular movie or they can take clips from the same movie and show an action movie. Reasons why non-film major would want to watch movie trailers like me is to guess how the outcome of a movie will be. If you watch trailers for a movie that hasn’t come out in theaters yet they could watch it and guess who will live or who will die. For example, you could watch scream four trailers and guess whom the killer is or who will not survive to the end of the movie. Or you could watch a movie and then watch the trailer for it and see how they presented the movie in the trailer and think about how you could have presented the movie.
ReplyDeleteI have a few hobbies, I love playing softball, lacrosse and throwing around a football with my brother, I enjoy shooting pictures and traveling but I think my favorite hobby and the one that takes up most of my time is volunteering. Currently I’m a member of P.E.A.C.E. on campus as well as a member of the Relay For Life Committee. I’ll admit waking up before 11 on a Saturday is not my favorite thing, but when I’m volunteering, and especially afterwards, I feel really good. I always come out having met new people and tried new things. Relay has been pretty stressful, especially recently because it’s taking place next Friday. I’m really excited for the event and especially when Luminaria is over. I’m the chair of Luminaria so hopefully that will go well and when it’s over I can relax and really focus on fundraising and having a good time. Most of all I’m excited for that feeling that I get when I know I’ve done something good. I can be proud of my co-chair, my fellow committee members, and myself because we are making a significant difference. I know first hand the kind of hard work that is going into Relay and it all is included in why volunteering is my favorite hobby. It surpasses playing a sport or taking pictures because while they bring me joy and is a lot of fun, nothing lives up to knowing that you did something that will impact the lives of others. The money I’m helping to raise will get cancer patients to and from treatment, and ease the difficult journey for them and their families. I’d recommend to anyone to get involved in their community and volunteer their time because it does a lot of good for the volunteer and the people they are helping.
ReplyDeleteTo Amber M.
ReplyDeleteI love taking pictures too. I did a lot of independent research in photography in high school and captured some really cool images. I am in extreme elites and I am also doing relay for life. There is a lot to do, so much stuff to think about and plan. After a hard day of work it does feel good to know you have accomplished a lot. I love doing community service; I volunteered at a homeless shelter this semester and it was fun. Plus you get to meet all sorts of people; it is just a really great experience.
Tennis defiantly has to be my favorite hobby. I play on the tennis team here at UT. I started playing when I was 12 has just a fun way to get out and try a new sport. I had played a variety of different sports when I was younger but when I played tennis I knew it was a sport I wanted to stick to. I do take the sport in a more serious matter than the occasional play, but I still consider it a hobby. Although sometimes I might complain about playing if I take a break from it I miss the game so much. When I pulled my abs in the fall I had to sit out for a week and it was horrible to just sent on the benches and watch when all I wanted to do was play. Our season is going to be ending soon we only have two matches left and then conference if we make it. It is so weird to think the season is over and that for the last couple weeks of classes I will not have practice. I am going to have to make sure to keep on hitting until the end of the year and all of summer. Someone should try tennis because it is not a sport where you need a whole group of people to have fun. It’s a great activity to run around and hit some balls. In Florida it is even better because you have the ability to play all year round outside and for the most part get a nice tan while playing. That is why everyone should try tennis.

ReplyDeleteThat is really cool that you like to watch movie trailers. Do you normally watch the trailers after you have seen the movie or both before and after? It seems like a really cool concept to see the difference between what you thought the movie would be and how it turned out. I know from some trailers and movies I have seen they made the trailer seem a lot better than the actual movie. I think trailers fool people sometimes because they put some of the best clips from the movie in them. I love watching movies so it is cool to see something else that involves movies that I can watch. I will defiantly take more notice now to how previews are portrayed after I watch the movie. It will be good to notice the difference of what I saw before and after watching the movie.
I have a variety of hobbies. Some may argue I’m slightly insane, but that’s here nor there. I love running; I absolutely adore it. I wake up every morning at 5 am (6 am on a bad day) and run to the track at a nearby high school, run 2 miles there, and then run back to my apartment. I’ve managed to persuade my roommate to join me. At first, she told me I was out of my mind, but now she goes every single day with me, or on her own at a slightly later time. It is completely refreshing and a great way to start your day. Whether you wake up feeling crappy, or just exhausted, once your adrenaline gets flowing, you’ll be captured by euphoria. Trust me; don’t knock it unless you’ve tried it. And you always should try something at least twice. Swimming laps also does the trick when the heat here in Florida is unbearable. Plus, you can get a nice tan while getting yourself in tip-top shape, and prepping your mind for the day. I’m also extremely into gymnastics, before I became a liability for an extensive amount of injuries, I could only be found if you ventured into the gym I trained at. When I wasn’t training for a meet or just for the heck of it, I would still spend my time there teaching classes as volunteer work. It’s a passion I suppose. It may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy pushing yourself to your limits and taking risks, you’ll fall in love. That’s a promise.
ReplyDeleteRees:
ReplyDeleteYour hobby seems pretty cool; it’s not something I’d ever really think to do but after reading your post I can definitely see how it could end up being really interesting and entertaining. I’d love to see some of the things you talked about that they do with different movie trailers, like mixing them together and coming up with something new. Being a non-film major, I don’t think I would know where to really find anything as great as you’ve described it. I also think it’s cool how you proposed to think about trailers, like watching them before or after a movie and comparing and contrasting your thoughts on them. Life is nothing without passion, and clearly your passionate about film and what you want to do with your future. Best of luck!
This may seem extremely corny, but I don't think enough people read books anymore. I love to sit on my bed cuddled up and read a good book. And I do mean a book. I don't mean reading on a laptop or a nook. I love to go into another world and escape my own for a while. The reason I feel as if you should have a book (a real one) is because it's such a forgotten thing to do. I can't tell you how many people tell me "I don't read". To me, that's so sad. Reading broadens your vocabulary, gives you knowledge, and is really quite entertaining if you're reading the right things. For people who tell me that they hate to read, I always tell them that they're not reading the right things. You need to find things you're interested in, and reading becomes a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteSo, here is my advice to you. Go pick up a book and read the back cover. Than, read the first page. If it catches your interest, actually read it. Get under the covers on a rainy day, or sit in a chair near the window when it's breezy outside. Than, you read the book. If you enjoy it, look for books by the same author or in the same genre. If not, keep trying. There really is so many great stories out there. I believe that no one dislikes reading, they just dislike reading things they don't like. Look for things you do like, and read them. It's well worth the search.
We all have come across that one song which we just fall in love with. It becomes our ringtone or the alarm that wakes us up in the morning. It’s the first song we put on when we get into the car and the one we sing throughout the day. When this happens to me, I sit down and begin to draw. Personally, I love artists such as Musiq Soulchild and Lupe Fiasco. You may know Musiq from “So Beautiful” or “Teachme” and Lupe from “Hip Hop Saved My Life” or his more recent song “The Show Goes On”. Over the summer, I was listening to Musiq Soulchild’s albums almost nonstop so I sat down and drew out a picture of him and incorporated watercolors and pastels. Similarly, I have been obsessed with Lupe Fiasco’s new album which came out last month, Lasers. My favorite song is “Words I Never Said” because in the song he blatantly tells what is on his mind, unabridged and uncensored. Though I was unable to be quite as fancy with this drawing, I sat down with my notebook and a pencil and drew out everything I see as I listen to this song; I took something that’s audible and turned it into something visual. It took some time, but when I was done I felt extremely relaxed and my mind cleared. Even though everyone may not be artistically inclined, it is important to keep some outlet in which you are able to express yourself freely.

ReplyDeleteYou sound like a very active person and I really admire your dedication to so many activities. Generally, I’m not a big fan of running, even though I participated in several different sports in high school which involved running almost constantly. Your post, however, just made me want to get up and go do a few laps at the track just now. Even online, you seem very passionate about it and your enthusiasm is contagious. I remember I tried gymnastics when I was younger and remember that even at a young age I refused to wake up at 8am on a Saturday, so I have the utmost respect for your waking up at 5am every morning to run.
Playing music has been an interest of mine ever since I was little. I started with piano and singing at the age of 5 and then have experimented with electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, drums, and violin since then. The one that has stuck with me has been playing the guitar and singing. I love the way the guitar sounds and the way my fingers feel as they pluck the strings. I get wrapped up in the sound and time seems to fly by. Playing musical instruments has allowed me time to escape reality and just have time to experiment with my instrument. I think that playing instruments is an essential part of appreciating the music that constantly surrounds us in our daily lives. I find that since I know how to play many instruments I can pick the individual instruments in the song and listen to the progressions played. It also gives me an appreciation of the musician’s talent and time they put into writing music and lyrics. I started writing music when I started high school, at age 15. It was a way that I could express what was going on in my life and all the things I had experienced. I found that it was easier for me to express my feelings through writing music and lyrics than it was for me to actually talk about it. Music doesn’t have to be the way that everyone finds their escape, but it has been very important to my life and I believe that everyone should find something that they are really passionate about and find an escape through that.
ReplyDeleteTo Carissa:
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post I feel like you and I are both very passionate about music and expressing ones individual artistic abilities. You and I express our talents differently but it both relates to music and the way it makes us feel. I wish that I were talented in art because there are times when I want to just sit down and draw but my abilities are extremely lacking haha. I really liked when you said “It took some time, but when I was done I felt extremely relaxed and my mind cleared” because it sounds exactly how I feel when I am done writing a song or playing my guitar. It is a way that I can relax and take my mind of the stresses of my day.
My all time favorite hobby has to be football. In high school I played on our schools flag football team all 4 years and words can not express how much I miss it. I was such a tomboy when I was younger and I played so many sports. We started playing tackle football with my neighbors and I fell in love with it. I could not wait until high school so I could finally play on an actual team. In high school I became the football manager and that pretty much helped me stay in shape in between the seasons because I would throw the ball around and help out a lot during the drills at practices. Now that I don’t have the football team to manage before a season to look forward to, I like to play catch. When I get upset or just stressed out this helps me relieve it so much. I throw the ball as hard and as far as I can and it feels so good. My mind and body repeat the same thing catch, step, throw. One of my teachers told me that we used to have a traveling girls flag football team and we could start it up again if we got enough girls. If we could do that I’d honestly be the happiest person ever. I don’t know what it is but when it was flag football season my grades always seemed to get better and i know that would be a great help now.
ReplyDelete@Slupino
ReplyDeleteI think that its really cool that you run every morning. I would do that but I need to buy a pair of shoes because oddly enough I don’t have any even though I played sports throughout high school. Lately I’ve really been getting the urge to go running or rollerblading just to relieve some stress and I think that it would be great if I actually went through with it one of these days. I did gymnastics for a couple of months when I was younger and it was really fun so I definitely could see how that’s fun.
I think one of my favorite hobbies is travelling. Being an international student, I have had many opportunities to travel and meet new people from all over the world. I find travel to be so exciting, especially by plane. I absolutely love airports. They are always busy with people from all over the world, people with different experiences and paths in life. I consider myself a “people-watcher”; I love it. It makes you realize how different people are from each other. I’ve been many of the states, Central America, and the Caribbean. Travelling has helped me learn more about the world and people around me.
ReplyDeleteConvincing someone to travel who hasn’t had much experience is an easy task. By visiting place you have never been before, you are opening your eyes to many new things: cultures, traditions, climates and people (for example). I believe that travelling is the perfect opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge about life. The world is huge and has so many places to be explored. Another belief that I have is that you can gain maturity by travelling. I say this because travelling causes you to step out of his/her comfort zone and try something new. Also, by seeing different place, one is able to learn that everyone is different and that not everyone lives in total comfort and happiness.
I always jump at the opportunity to travel. The thrill of new experiences is always so exciting. I feel that it is where I learn most lessons about life, one’s that you can’t read about in textbooks.
In response to Katie:
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that I love to play music too! I am impressed with all the instruments that you have tried – quite the list. That’s awesome that you can sing and play guitar, I’d love to learn both. I agree with you that music is can be used as a tool to express your emotions and feelings about the world around you. I used to play piano and alto saxophone. I loved being able to play them. I find that you can learn a lot from music, both play and listening to it. We are both lucky that we have had these musical skills because, I feel, that they are skills we will be able to use for the rest of our lives.
I absolutely love horseback riding. It’s a great way to spend several hours doing absolutely nothing but spending time with yourself and a horse. You don't even have to be advanced to find joy in it. My entire senior year was spent going after school to the barn where my horse was boarding and just throwing a bridle on him. I'd take him out to the pasture, put my mp3 player on one of my favorite songs, stick it in my pocket and just ride until the sun went down. It gave me several hours to focus on me and think about what I was going to do either for the rest of that day or the rest of week. You don’t really need to put any effort into it besides directing the horse because all you’re really doing is walking around. Trail riding offers the same kind of escape from reality. It was great stress reliever and I still do it now when college gets a little too stressful. Just being atop a horse and not having to worry about anything, just listen to music and let it take you into whatever world your mind can conjure. It's the perfect past time for anyone. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a way to relieve stress or just spend a few hours by themselves not really doing anything that requires too much effort.

ReplyDeleteI think it’s awesome that you have a unique and creative hobby. I wish I had more artistic talent, but the truth is I’m still on the stick figure level. I also love music and I think it’s true for everyone that music paints a picture in your head. For you to be able to translate that to paper is an awesome talent. I agree that it’s important to have a creative outlet. It’s relaxing, therapeutic and personal. As a hobby, art doesn’t have to be for anyone but you and I think that’s really important. Doing something completely for your own benefit is something people need to do more often. That’s what hobbies should be about, doing whatever it is that brings you joy without worrying about what others think or being judged. I hope you stick to your art and never become too busy to do what you love.
I have many hobbies, but one of my favorites would have to be dancing. Ever since I was little I have loved it. However, I have never taken any classes or ever been a part of a dance team. I just learned from friends or watching music videos and other dances on TV I guess. When I would see a dance move on TV that I liked I teach it to myself until I got it right. I remember I was in a dance contest when I was little at the camp I went to. Unfortunately I do no think I won. I lost to the older campers. My family has always been wondering where I got my good dancing from. No one else in my family has ever danced professionally or much at all, and no one else is particularly good at it. I’m pretty sure everyone had danced before. Whether it was as a young kid or going out with friends now, we have all danced at some time in our life. It allows you to release some energy and just let go for a little while. When you dance you don’t really have a care in the world and all stressors go away. If you are ever stressed or sad about something, I suggest turning the music up loud and dancing to it. You can let out steam if you’re angry or cheer up if you are sad. When you are depressed or bummed out about something it let’s you see that there are worse things in life, and better yet too many good things in life to be sad over that one thing.
ReplyDeleteRees,
ReplyDeleteI learned that this was a hobby of yours earlier this semester when I saw you watching trailers during a break in class. I found it funny and I didn’t really believe you at first because I have never met someone that had your hobby before. I get it though: since you are a film major and love movies, the trailer is like a taste test before you eat the whole thing. I especially find it so interesting that you replay the trailer over and over again to try to foresee what will happen in the movie. I’ve never thought of it that way. I just watch trailers once to decide whether or not I want to see the movie. I also watch them to figure out if I want to pay for it at the theaters or wait to rent it on DVD. I don’t know how many times you have guessed right, but I bet you are much better at guessing the outcome than me.
Of all my hobbies I have to say that traveling is my all time favorite. I mean there is so much past our front door step that so many people in this world don’t even realize. Compared to the rest of the world the U.S. doesn’t have too much history. People need to go out and explore. Go back and trace your roots, find out where your ancestors came from and lived. Experiencing different cultures is one of the best experiences any person could ever live through. It not only opens your eyes, but also your mind to the kind of things that are out there in the world. Not saying that America does not have a lot to offer, because some of the sites are just amazing to see, but you need to live a little. Taste new foods, see new things, meet new people, and enjoy the wonders of the world. Life is so short, people need to get up off the couch and live a life of excitement. Yeah I know that one of the big arguments is that it is too expensive. Realistically though, there are ways to do it. I have done it and I know others who have done it also. You don’t always need a tour guide or a bus tour to take you somewhere. The most expensive part is usually getting there. After that, it is very easy to find cheap living and cheap transportation. The areas of the world will be there for forever, but we won’t. So make you time worth it and travel.
ReplyDeleteTo DRusso:
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you on the fact that people need to pick up a real book, not a laptop or a nook. I feel like that is such a waste of money. I love going into a bookstore and just roaming through the aisles. I think it is also so sad how a lot of bookstores are now closing. People need to get back into just reading an old fashioned book and learning new things. We need to open our horizon on so much that is our there. I’m glad to know there are still people out there who still like old fashioned books.
One of my favorite hobbies is to take walks outside, or exercise for a half hour every day. For me, I tend to get stressed throughout my busy days and feel like I need to escape some how. I have realized by taking walks I am able to de-stress and at the same time, get fresh air that in a way reenergizes me. Living in Florida I am able to take advantage of the beautiful weather, which allows me to go outside for an hour everyday. The mixture of sunshine and fresh air can really turn my day and mood from bad to good. When I am not so fortunate with the weather, and am back home in New Jersey: I make sure I get to the gym for a half hour every day. Going on the elliptical or the treadmill allows me to get the same exercise and stress reliever that I need daily. I suggest that everyone gets some form of exercise every single day. Whether it be outside or inside, they both allow you to revamp and have a great start to your day. Exercising can change your bad attitude or stressful day around in just minutes, and while your working out your also improving your health, and all around self-image.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if this qualifies as a hobby, but I love nature. Everything about it: from forests to oceans. I love to hike and appreciate the outdoors. I could sit outside all the time as long as it’s not below freezing or the weather is severe. Our society is now so technologically based that people do not spend enough time outside. I also love to run and read, both of which are perfect to do while appreciating our natural world. There are also so many organizations that help conserve and I like to volunteer when I can. I usually like to focus on groups that are concerned with species conservation, but conservation of our planet is important as well. I think that everyone should be conscious of how we treat our planet. It is of utmost importance. If we are not educated on the effects we have on our world, then we continue to make it worse. Even the smallest act, like recycling a bottle, contributes. Just that small act helps reduce plastic consumption. I do not think that people are educated enough on how quickly our planet is crumbling. Global warming, although natural, is not being reduced by humans. We are contributing to global warming, only decreasing the time of life on earth. Overall, volunteering or even just educating oneself on the world around us is a very important thing to do because it will help keep the human race, as well as other species, alive for a longer period of time.
ReplyDeleteTo Carissa Cullum,
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome. I have never really heard of anyone drawing to music. It is very cool that you take a song and draw what it makes you feel. I had to write a paper one time interpreting the different aspects of the song, what the lyrics meant, what the music behind the lyrics meant, and so forth. That was very difficult for me to do. The idea of putting a song to painting seems like it would stress me out incredibly. I admire your patience and your ability to sit for extended periods drawing out one song.
One of my favorite pass times is singing and playing guitar. I write americana/folk songs and enjoy it a great deal. I play my guitar a little everyday and perform out at least 2-3 times a month. I have been playing since I was 8 or 9. I guess it all started when I was driving with my father and a song title, "Smoke on the Water" by a classic rock group called, "Foghat" came on the radio. I thought the tune sounded really cool and my father, whom had been playing guitar my whole life told me he would teach it to me when we got home. From that night on I was hooked. I think someone picking up any kind of instrument is very cathartic and healing in many ways. I write songs about things I have gone through or things my friends and family have gone through. It's a great outlet and a stress reliever. It's perfect for anyone that may have a hard time articulating their thoughts or feelings in everyday conversation. The ability to express those emotions in a more poetic way is not only a release, it can be a lot of fun, especially if you play with other musicians. I used to play with a full band back home but I have yet to find that kind of chemistry with fellow musicians for the kind of music I write, around here. If given the opportunity, I would certainly start up a band again. Until then, I am fully enjoying the release the playing and singing give to me.
ReplyDeleteFor the past nineteen years of my life I have gone through and enjoyed many hobbies. The one I have enjoyed the most was playing soccer. Soccer was my favorite sport and played it for many many years. If you haven’t tried playing soccer you should try now. It is just a great feeling to slip on shin guards and tie the laces of the soccer cleats knowing you will soon be on a field. The soccer field was my second home and it allowed me just to get away from my problems. Playing soccer also helped release any stress and allowed my problems to go away. Besides releasing any tension, soccer kept me in a shape. Even though getting to the physical conditioning where I needed to be was a lot of work, it was well worth it in the end. Being in the best shape made the team I was on successful at every game and champions. Soccer was a lot fun and allowed me to make new friends. The team I was on became my family and knowing you have people always there for you who aren’t related to you is such an amazing feeling. If I could recommend a hobby for someone, it would be this sport. It allows someone to experience such an adrenaline rush and also have their own type of stress management. Soccer was the perfect hobby for me and if college did not get in the way of playing, I would be on the field every day doing what I loved.
ReplyDeleteMy hobby is to experience new things. Whenever I go somewhere, and even when I just stay at home, I like to try to find things to do that I have never done before. I guess this hobby is more like a combination of a ton of different hobbies that I only do a few times each. I don’t really have one particular thing that I continue to do over and over again. Instead, I like to be spontaneous and switch things up. Even when I was younger, I would never stay with the same sport for very long. I liked to try to play as many different sports as I could. I was in tumbling, ballet, tap, acrobatics, gymnastics, figure skating, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and karate. Last semester, I was on an intramural beach volleyball team. This is actually the first time in my life that I’m not involved in any kind of sport. I often do things that I know I’m afraid of, just to see how daring I can be. For example, over this past summer I travelled alone for the first time in my life to Bogotá, Colombia. The most frightening part of the trip was the fact that I don’t really speak any Spanish whatsoever (and trust me when I say that EVERYONE there speaks Spanish). While I was there, I climbed a huge rock wall, met my penpal of five years, explored an old salt mine, took a cable car to the top of a mountain, and fell in love with the Colombian food arepas. In my normal, day to day life, I do things like work as a photographer at Busch Gardens and speak with thousands of people every day (even though I’m extremely shy), ride every frightening ride you could imagine, and randomly pack up and drive to Orlando just to go to SeaWorld for the day. I also like to read, write my own stories and poems, spend hours beating the latest Pokémon game, and play Just Dance 2 on the Wii with my roommate. I think everyone should be open to new experiences and possibilities at all times. Not only does it make life interesting, but it also helps you to understand many different aspects of living and helps you to overcome your fears, judgments, and laziness.
ReplyDelete@Mackenzie,
ReplyDeleteI love nature too! Some of my favorite memories are of when my family took me on vacations every summer to a cabin in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. It was so quiet and beautiful there, and I think those vacations (and the fact that my parents would always insist on me spending time outdoors daily) really affected how I feel about nature in general. My dad also works as an arborist, so I've always been really into plants and trees and conservation, because his views kind of got passed on to me. Whenever I really want to get into a new book or have an inspiration to write something truly creative, I try to go outside. I feel at peace there, and it brings out my creativity better than any other place in the world.
In reply to: Katie Faunce,
ReplyDeleteI think being able to play an instrument is an amazing talent. I have always been very envious of those that were able to sing and play so naturally. Many people have ways of escaping whether it is from exercising, or talking about the issue. I agree however, that both playing and writing music, is an incredible way to escape especially when you are so passionate about it. It is great that you are still so avid about playing and have continued to play throughout the years. I think that must be a very peaceful and enjoyable hobby to do.
@Katie Faunce
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you're so interested in music, and that you've experimented with so many different kinds of instruments. Personally, I know that music can be a great escape, because I play instruments myself. I also agree with you that playing instruments help you appreciate others talents. When I listen to music with people, and they don't seem to recognize how much hard work is really put into the process, especially those artists who write their own music, it baffles me. I think it's great that you're so involved in music, and being a musician, I wish there were more people like you now.
Mackezie,
ReplyDeleteI too am a pretty big fan of nature. I am a marine biology major and when I was living in Maine, I was volunteering for a non-profit called, Friends of Casco Bay. I would conduct water quality sampling for them as well as partake in beach cleanings and ecological studies of Maine lobster and eel grass. Our lobster ecology survey was actually used by the state of maine to regulate fishing quotas for lobster fishermen in the casco bay to ensure they would maintain a healthy population. I felt doing these things were a stress relief for me as well. It also feels good to educate other people in the process. What organizations or causes do you volunteer for? I would like to get involved with some volunteer work around here but have been so busy with school. Perhaps if I knew of some opportunities I would volunteer though.
To Mackenzie,
ReplyDeleteYou definitely aren't the only one who loves spending time with nature or helping it any way they can. If your up for it, there's a video on youtube about a recycle epidemic that's pretty cool to watch. You can't even tell its about recycling till the very end of the video where people kind of figure it out. The whole commercial has to do with plastic bottles becoming stuck to people's hands and the scientists figure out how to get them off by holding their hand with the bottle over the recycling bin and throwing the bottle in there. It's pretty cool to watch and it just reinforced that we need to recycle in order to help the planet. Not only that but I also think that people need to get out more and try and get away from spending so much time on the computer. I definitely agree that hiking or taking a book out with you and just spending a few hours outside reading is a great way to spend a few hours and really connect with the world outside of computers and what you see on the television.
One of my favorite hobbies is playing music. I absolutely love playing my guitar or learning new songs on the piano. When I’m bored at home, I usually belt out a whole playlist of songs and sing to my dog and mom. They go crazy and my dog starts to howl…but trust me, they love it. To be honest, music has always been a part of my life. In elementary school I began to pick up the violin, trumpet, and drums. I learned to jam to different rock bands in my basement as my dad taught me all about rock n’ roll.
ReplyDeleteIn high school I learned how to play the guitar while I was sick and out of school for a month. It was the best month of my life, might I add. Now I play the guitar in the music department at school. I’ve learned a lot here, and it’s been a ton of fun. Music is definitely a great hobby to have because one can express himself or herself. Plus, who doesn’t like music?
My friends always say they don’t have that “musical ability” or “talent,” but that is ridiculous. No one is great from the start, and everyone begins somewhere. It’s biologically true that anyone can sing. It’s just whether or not they train their voices to be able to do so. So take some lessons, practice, and maybe music can be your hobby too.

ReplyDeleteI think that your hobby is really interesting. In fact, I don’t think that I have ever heard of watching movie trailers as being a hobby. Although, the way you explained how you analyze the movie trailers was neat. It is fascinating to see what scenes are used and altered for the trailer to draw viewers in. There is only so much time to show the important parts of a movie and still deliver a message. I believe you are in the right major if this is your hobby!

ReplyDeleteI am jealous your hobby is traveling. I find it lucky for someone to be able to travel around and experience new places. The farthest I have traveled was to Mexico and to know you have gone to most of the United States and two different countries and also being from Canada makes me want to get up and book the next flight to somewhere exciting. I love airports too well only when the security line is not long. Also I find myself to be a “people watcher” but I try not to judge anyone since everyone has their own reasons for being different.
