A Tough Question

Since the death of James Berlin, there have been very few advocates for social epistemic pedagogy.  To what would you attribute to this decline in popularity and what merit, if any, does social epistemic pedagogy still carry in the 21st century?

Ha ha, just kidding.  What'd you do over spring break?  As usual, 250 word post up by Thursday night (03/17) and 100 word response up by Sunday night (03/20).

  1. IM GLAD THAT WAS A JOKE BECAUSE I WAS LOST!
For spring break I went back home to Maryland and stayed the weekend at my best friend's school. We had a lot of fun catching up and hanging out. We played lots of games with her roommates, who were pretty cool, and we explored her campus. They had two of the same places we have: Jazzmans and Pandinis. I also discovered their meal plan was a lot better than ours. They can get as many meals as they want from the cafeteria and from other places on campus plus they had flex dollars, which is like our Spartan dollars, and they can use it on restaurants near by. Then I went to my house and saw the rest of my friends. I had to Skype some of my friends from school though I know one of my buds cant survive with out me. Some days I went to the mall and of course I went to the movies. Going to the movies is the only thing I can ask for from life. Being a film major should explain why. During break I saw Battle Los Angeles, Take me home tonight, and Red riding hood. The rest of my time was spent doing some homework and studying, I don’t know why teachers give homework on breaks. The best part about going home was being able to eat as much chipotle as I wanted. Chipotle is one of my favorite places to eat so I had it five times.

  2. My spring break was pretty fun this year. For the first half of the spring break the tennis team had a tournament in Orlando. We had matches on Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday. The team decided to stay in Orlando from Sunday to Tuesday and we got to stay in super nice condos and have a day off. During our day off the team went mini golfing together, and then everyone went to the pool. The team was split into 2 condos where we then had to each cook something for dinner, my team made fajitas that were delicious. Then we went to downtown Disney and walked around and ate a ton of ice cream. For the rest of my spring break I went home to Wesley Chapel fl and I met up with a lot of my high school friends that also had the same spring break as me. Thursday night I went to Bulls club with a bunch of friends and had a great time. Then the rest of spring break I went to the pool and hung out with my family. My family and I went to a sushi restaurant because it is all our favorite food, it was nice to go because sushi is normally expensive and I didn’t have to pay for it. It was also so nice to be home and eat homemade food and not have to deal with eating in the cafeteria or how many meals I have left. Spring break defiantly went by too fast but it was a good one, and now it is time to get back into the swing of things.

That’s so cool you got to stay in a condo! How big was it? How many people were in each condo? Was the pool by the condo? I have not been mini golf since I have been down here, which is really sad because I love mini golf. If the ice cream expensive in down town Disney? I feel like everything down there is really expensive. I LOVE SUSHI, If I didn’t have to pay for it I would have ordered SO much sushi. Yea I agree spring break did go by kind of fast I wish I could go back to the beginning of it.

  4. To Rees,

That’s cool that you went back to Maryland, was it cold their? That’s lucky that the campus had better food options. I wish our school would have something like that I would enjoy eating at UT a lot more. We defiantly need more restaurants here to choose from. Battle Los Angeles looked like such a good movie; I hope it lived up to the previews at least. I saw Take me home tonight, I though it was really funny, predictable but still a good enough story line to keep me interested. The actors in the movie were also a plus because I love the previous work that they had done. That is a shame that you had homework and studying to do over break. I guess my teachers were nice to me or just didn’t want to have to grade more things because I did not have any homework to do. Sounds like overall you had a good spring break over all though.

  5. Unfortunately, my spring break was completely uneventful. I spent much of my spring break reading books, which believe it or not is pretty satisfying for me, and going out to dinner with my boyfriend. We also saw some movies together, and all in all it was a normal week aside from the fact that I didn't have to get up early four times during the week for eight AM classes; which in itself was quite a treat for me.

I was planning on going home, but due to lack of planning on my part, and my families, when my father called to ask if I wanted to come home, prices had risen to five hundred a ticket, and I didn't want to make my father pay way more than he had to in order for me to go home.

Over the break I've also found out that there may be an issue at home that I need to go home for, so my trying to prevent my father from spending so much money may have been in vain. However, I'm still hoping that I did save him the money, and hoping that I don't NEED to go home. While it would be nice to see my family, it wouldn't be nice under the current circumstances.

So really to sum it up, my spring break wasn't really anything special, but hopefully it doesn't matter because I have some plans for the next few weeks that should make up for it. Starting with my trip to the beach this Friday.

I think it's great that you got to live with your teammates for those few days. When I was in high school, I always loved the team bonding things that we did for softball, so I know how great it can be to hang out with each other on a different level, besides just the sports. Getting out and doing something different, like mini-golf and cooking dinner together is a great way to bond differently than just the sport that you're involved in.

Also, I am genuinely jealous that you got to go for sushi with your family. I love sushi, and there is a great sushi place back home where I'm from that I couldn't go to this spring break. I'm really picky about my sushi, and can't bring myself to go anywhere around here and try it out.

  7. Spring break 2011 was definitely one to remember. I spent my entire break Orlando. For the first half of break, I was there for a tennis match with the UT tennis team. We played really well and ended up winning our match against a school from Michigan. I bet the girls on that team enjoyed the nice Floridian weather (compared to what they are experiencing up North). The second half of break I spent with my friends (in Orlando). It was such a fun time. The trip consisted of us spending days by the resort’s pools, shopping at fabulous outlet malls, going to Downtown Disney, and spending a day at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. I did like Disney World, but I must admit that I have no intention of going back until I’m married and have kids. It was very overwhelming with all of the kids, long lines for rides and the expensive food. Nevertheless, I was still touched by the “magic of Disney.” We also went to a midway (go-karting, rides and arcade games) while we were in Orlando. That was fun, although I was a little too scared to go go-karting.

My spring break was a lot of fun: good friends, good food and good times. I could have benefited from a longer break though, even if it was only another day or two. Monday morning classes came way too quickly. I’m finding it hard to get back into the swing of classes, but I’m sure the routine will do me some good.

I’m jealous of that school’s meal plan! It sounds amazing compared to ours. Having unlimited meals in the cafeteria would be wonderful. It sounds like you had a busy Spring Break. Between friends, parties and the movies, you had a lot going on. I really want to see Red Riding Hood. It looks like it would be a good movie.

It sucks that you had homework over Spring Break. Not to rub it in, but I had none. It was definitely nice to have a break from the worry of assignments, papers and exams.

I have to admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Chipotle. I used to love that restaurant, but I had it one too many times first semester, which kind of ruined it for me.

Glad your Spring Break was fun!

  10. Where to start? So, I happened to start my Spring Break a little bit early leaving for Miami on March 4. There I was greeted by my uncle who picked me up at the airport. I went to work with him and then picked up my cousins and just hung out. Later that day my grandparents on my mom's side arrived. The next day I met up with my mom and sister; where we caught up and celebrated my uncle and grandmother's birthdays. March 6th, I headed back to Tampa to meet up with my two roommates for us to just go back to the east coast of Florida. You're probably thinking why would I go back to Tampa just to go back but road tripping is definitely the best part. For the rest of Spring Break my roommates and I went up and down the East coast visiting Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. We spent most of the week on the beach or by the pool relaxing. If we weren't there we were shopping in malls (probably went to about 10 different malls this past week). Also, eating out with "real food" was amazing. Diners seemed to be popular especially one we went to where you sit in swings. To end our break we visited one of my roommates grandparents in Boca Raton and had a really nice and funny time with them. So sweet. Spring Break was way to fast!

  11. Spring Break was a much needed time off school. I went to back home to Orlando for the week and had a decent time. The thing I loved the most was having home cooked meals. My first home cooked meal was chicken, steak, sausage, mashed potatoes and peas. It was like heaven! I spent a lot of time at home with my parents and brothers which was good for about 2 days. I had to sleep on the couch because my room upstairs was taken over for storage of all of my sisters stuff because she was moving into a new place. I pretty much got zero sleep.
Other than that, I got to see my best friends which was like a breath of fresh air. I spent all day at a tattoo shop one day while my two friends both got sweet tattoos. The night that was my favorite though was my sisters birthday. This was the first time we’ve been able to go out together and now that I think of it the first time I’ve been out to a club. Thanks to the time change we didn’t get home until 5 in the morning and I had to be up at 8 to come back to Tampa. I wish I had more nights like that because it was like I didn’t have a care in the world, and I got to bond with my sister and all of her friends who I’ve known since I was like 8 years old. It makes me way excited for summer!

  12. This spring break was by far the best I have ever had. I was able to go to Disney for a few days, spend some time at the beach, and I really enjoyed not having to stress about school and homework. Disney World is a place I could probably spend the rest of my life! Even though I am 18 years old, I still have the heart of a 5 year old and my eyes light up the second I see the Disney sign. The beach was so much fun and I got to see a bunch of old friends. But this spring break was the best not for any of those reasons. My brother has been really sick for the past few years with a lot of different issues involving his liver. It has been a huge stress on my life for the past couple of months because he has been so sick. All of my family lives on the west coast so being so far away from them is hard on me. On March 7th my brother received a long awaited liver transplant. He had been on the waiting list for almost a year now. He is the strongest person I know and he is the most amazing influence on my life. This transplant is already giving my brother a whole new life and I can’t wait to go home soon and see him.

  13. To Katie...

Katie I'm glad you had an amazing spring break and it's everything you hoped it would be. Like you, I did spend mine on the beach as well which was fabulous. No homework made it that much better as well. I can't believe you went to Disney. It literally is one of my all time favorite places in the United States. We'll have to plan a trip sometime. I just wanted to let you know how truely amazing your brother's story is. I'm so glad your prayers were answered and not only your brother but your family can start a new chapter in life. Your brother's story really made me think about life and what is truely important in this world. DZ LOVE!!!!

  14. I had an awesome spring break. My mom and brother came down to visit me, and we had a great time. We spent the first weekend with some family in Kissimmee. It was really nice to get away for a while, sleep late, and relax. We also got to see the Yankees play against the Astros while we were there.

We then spent the rest of the week back in Tampa at a hotel. I had to work on Tuesday and Wednesday, which wasn’t too bad. We went out to dinner afterwards, and luckily I got to go to two of my favorite restaurants; Bahama Breeze and The Cheesecake Factory. My brother, who is fourteen (but thinks he’s eighteen), kept asking me if we could stay in my dorm for a night. Finally I agreed, and he enjoyed getting a little bit of a taste of what college life is like.

On Wednesday night, my dad drove down and surprised us, which was really exciting. On Thursday we went to see the Yankees play the Phillies in Clearwater. It was really nice to be able to watch the game, instead of work it, and spend the day with my family. We spent Friday and Saturday relaxing, and made a trip to the mall, movies to see Hall Pass (which was great!), and the beach.

Overall, it was a great week, even though it went by way too fast. I really enjoyed spending time with my family, and made some great memories.

It sounds like you had a great break! It’s really cool that you got a chance to travel all over Florida, and got to spend it with both family and friends. I’m hoping that at some time in the future, I’ll get a chance to do the same thing. I’ve always wanted to go to Miami. I heard it’s awesome. I also really enjoyed eating “real food” this week. lol. Going out to eat every night was definitely one of the highlights of my week as well. I also agree that it went by way too fast!

  17. My spring break was mostly just relaxing and having fun. The first weekend back I went camping with my family and we got to see the Atlas rocket go up from a few miles away. There were like 15 people crowded onto a little dock that ran out a few feet into the river running alongside the launch pads. It was funny cause the littlest kids started freaking out when the rocket come out over the river instead of going straight up like they thought it would. All in all, the camping part was pretty fun and then I just kind of spent the rest of the week relaxing at home. I did go ride my horse for a good 4 hours which was probably a mistake since I haven't ridden in so long. I could barely walk the next day. Ugh. Anyway, I enjoyed the time and was very relaxed by the time I came back.

  18. DRusso,

I'm sorry to hear that your family was having some problems over spring break but hopefully that all turns out to be okay. Either way, it sounds like you had a pretty relaxing spring break and just enjoyed some quality time with your boyfriend. I totally agree with how nice not getting up at 8 o'clock in the morning is, especially when you've been doing it for the longest time now. I'm also kind of excited for you since you seemed to have planned out some awesome stuff for the next couple weeks. Hopefully, they turn out as awesome and excited as you want them to be.

  19. For spring break this year I went back home to Massachusetts. I was very busy throughout the week but one thing I didn’t do much of was sleep. I had a 6 AM flight Friday morning and went to a Sam Adam’s concert Friday night at my cousin’s school, which resulted in about three hours of sleep in the course of two days. However, it was worth it because the concert was great. I live a little north of Boston so two trips into Boston were definitely a part of my week. One day I went in to visit my brother at his apartment and another day I went to his girlfriend’s salon to get pampered! During the week I hung out with friends and family that I don’t get to see often now that I go to school in Florida. Even though the weather was colder than what I’m used to, it was warm for Massachusetts at this time of year. I was thankful for that because I don’t think I could handle the normal March temperatures. I certainly missed the 70-degree weather though, especially since it was so ugly back home- cloudy skies, no leaves on the trees, and the snow melting resulting in mud everywhere. Overall I’m very glad I went home for spring break. It served as a nice break from school in the middle of the semester to hold me over until I go home again in May. I think I might stay in Florida next year to do a small trip somewhere like many other people did this year, or have a friend come down here during spring break instead of me going up there.

  20. Over spring break, my best friend came down from Cleveland to visit me. We met when we were ten years old, catching the school bus on our first day to 5th grade. She didn't know where I came from (I had to cross the street instead of coming out of the apartments where she lived) and she kept looking at me funny. Needless to say, we didn't like each other. As time moved on, we grew much closer. I was excited for her to come down since she booked her plane ticket back in November. We had a few adventures and were able to spend a lot of time with my friends and family, since I had been promising them all semester I would see them soon. Most nights we didn’t go to sleep until 5 AM. When we visited my aunt, we played a game called Kayodo (or something along those lines). Pretty much you take the piece of paper which has some nonsense word on it and two lines already drawn. Underneath is “Is____...____...____.” Meaning, you take turns filling in the blanks to create a definition for the word provided. The piece of paper began with me, went to my best friend, and ended with my aunt. After several rounds, we found that my aunt, being as mature as she is, ended all of them with someone or something peeing. My family may be far from normal, but I love them and was glad to just relax and spend time with the people I love over break.

  21. This spring break, I went back home to New Jersey. I had a very nice , relaxing vacation that was much needed. I love spending time with my family, and I was able to do just that. On Friday when I got back from the airport , my mom and I went to see a near by high school perform Beauty and the Beast. It was absolutely amazing., equivalent to many broadways shows that I have seen. The actors and actresses had beautiful voices, and they did not mess up one line throughout the whole show! All together, the performance was impeccable and I am very glad I was able to go see it with my mom. Unfortunately I was not able to see my older sister, because she spent her break in Punta Cana, lucky, but I was able to spend quality time with my two younger brothers. My 16-year-old brother had a state championship basketball game that was very fun watch, yet at some points too intense. Although they did not win, I was very glad I was able to go and support him. Along with my 16-year-old brother, my 9-year-old brother also had a few basketball games that I was able to see. I love being able to come home and spend time with my family and friends, and eat a few good meals along the way. I think that after being away at school you appreciate home and everything it has to offer a lot more.

Unfortunately, my break included very little sleep as well. It sounds like yours was well worth it though since you were out having fun! I’m extremely jealous of your pampered spa day. I don’t remember the last time I was able to treat myself at a salon haha! Anyways, Massachusetts sounds like a nice place to visit. Although I’ve been up north a few times, I haven’t had the chance to visit the New England area yet. Boston would be a great place to visit, I suppose, as long as the weather isn’t as ugly as you described. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see!

Fortunately it sounds like you had a lot of luck with you last week! I’m so jealous you got to go to Disney. I went there for the first time freshmen year of high school and didn’t know if I would still enjoy it being older than the usual crowd there. But like you, I felt like such a little kid because I had a great time and loved it. I’m also jealous you got to go to the beach. I absolutely love going to the beach, especially in Florida. The beaches here are so pretty and fun. I’m sorry about what you have had to go through with your brother, but it is good to hear he is improving because of the transplant. Disney, the beach, and you’re brother getting better- I don’t think anyone can top that as the best spring break.

  24. I had a very relaxing spring break. My mom and my sister came down to Tampa and we drove over to my grandma’s house in Vero Beach. Although it’s mainly a retirement community, it was very nice to just have some peace and quiet. We took garden tours and went to the beach on the nicer days. About fifteen minutes down the road from my grandma’s condo is a park across from a beach that is known for its manatee sitings. This was my favorite part of the trip. They seemed to be most active in the morning hours so almost every morning I would drive over with my mom and we would just sit and watch the manatees in the river. I think that I could sit there all day and listen to them come up for air.
Many of the nights we would just stay in at my grandma’s house, but we would also go out to dinner. We walked the boardwalk a few nights and got ice cream. Basically, the week was a catch up on all the good food I have been missing. I played a few sets of tennis with my mom and my grandmother and ran on the beach a few days with my sister. We took a day to shop in the outlet malls, but overall it was just a much needed week of relaxation.

  25. When I first read the beginning of the response you wanted us to write I thought to myself: “ Really?” But my spring break was very eventful and started earlier than some. I went home that Thursday back to New Jersey as everyone was awaiting to go to the Keys or some other beach down here in Florida. All I was looking forward to was sleeping in my own comfy bed. I was home for six days and those days were filled with visiting friends and family I did not see for the past two months and also going to other colleges to see how their night life is compared to the one in Tampa, Florida. The last day home consisted of me packing and getting my two friends together to join me on the plane ride back. When we ended up running on our plane and getting on the flight ten minutes before it was supposed to depart I knew it was going to be an eventful trip. We arrived in Tampa and their eyes widened when they saw palm trees everywhere. For the six days they were here I showed them around, brought them out to clubs and laid by the pool since they were not used to doing that in the middle of March. My spring break did get out of control at parts but overall it was great. I had a relaxing yet fun time with my friends and family but hopefully next year I could be a little more adventurous.

  26. My spring break was pretty eventful! I had decided very last minute to visit a friend in Washington D.C. While there I went to the natural history museum. It is my absolute favorite museum! I am pretty fond of the giant squid they have on display as well as being greeted by a giant mammoth as you enter the museum. While in D.C. my friend and I did a lot of catching up. I would say the only touristy thing we did was visit the museum and the Lincoln memorial. I have been to the Lincoln Memorial on several occasions and it always blows me away. When I got back to Tampa I actually spend a good deal of time on campus in my bio225 lab looking at preserved herp specimens in preparations for a lab practical I have next week. I was fortunate enough to have my professor on campus the entire week to let me into the lab to study. It was a good proactive move as I felt confident all this week in lab as I was privy to a lot of the physiological aspects of the upcoming exam. All in all, I am happy with how I chose to spend my vacation. I feel I balanced it perfectly with work and play. That's not to say I wouldn't have taken someone up on a trip to somewhere more exotic over hanging in a room full of dead reptiles placed in jars of formalin.

  27. To Ashley Bernstein,
That’s awesome that you got to spend time with both family and friends. I also saw family and it was really nice to be able to just hang out with them and be stress free for a week. I completely agree with the eating real food part. That’s what I look forward to on breaks. It’s not that our school has terrible food, because it could be much worse, but it is still college food. That diner with the swings sounds interesting. I totally agree that break went by too fast, but it was still awesome.

  28. For spring break I wish I could have gone home, but flights to Pennsylvania were just too expensive. I went to my aunt and uncle’s house on Thursday and caught up on some sleep and relaxed. I didn’t bother bringing any schoolwork with me because I figured I deserved a break. I came back to Tampa on Saturday afternoon and spent the weekend with my friend who was also stuck on campus. We relaxed and laid out on the dock by the river a few times. On Monday we both went over to my aunt’s house because we were leaving for Saint Augustine early the next morning. The 3 hour drive up was actually fun because we were excited to see my cousin who lives in Jacksonville. Saint Augustine was beautiful and we just spent the day being tourists. I took lots of pictures and enjoyed being in the historic city. We went to a chocolate factory and had some fudge and visited a hospital museum (which was kind of boring/disturbing) SO glad I wasn’t around back in the day. We also went to the fort and then traveled up to Jacksonville. We checked into the hotel, got dinner out then went to watch my cousin play softball. The next day we went shopping, to the beach and then to a really cool bowling/arcade place. It was nice to get away from Tampa for a few days. When I got back to school I just soaked in the sun and caught up on schoolwork for a couple of days Overall it was a nice break and I’m ready to take on the last quarter of the school year!

I am so happy for you and your family that your brother was able to get a liver transplant and that it was successful. It makes me feel lucky that I have my health and so does my immediate family. I admire your strength and honesty, because I know it can’t be easy. I can relate somewhat because my brother is also a huge influence on me and he means the world to me. So I can only imagine how I could handle him being sick. The best of luck to you and your family!!
I’m glad you had a nice and well-deserved break. I too love Disney and always will regardless of my age. I also get just as excited as a 5 year old, and I’m proud of it! There’s nothing like being around all that happiness and innocent fun. I’ve been there a bunch of times and I never ever get tired of it. I do get tired of the lines and crowds though haha.

  30. I ended up having to cancel my original spring break plans due to a family emergency. I flew home to New Jersey to be there to support my family. I could not be any happier that I did choose to go home. I also know if I didn't make this decision, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy my spring break anyway. I would have been fighting constant worries and panic. Anyway, everything worked out for the most part. It was nice to see my family and friends too, considering I hardly ever get to go home. My boyfriend also surprised me and flew into Jersey. He had already spoken with my parents about it and arranged the plans. They sent me out to pick up food for dinner, and when I got back to my house he was sitting in my kitchen waiting for me. I couldn’t tell if I was imagining it at first, or if it was really happening. After things cooled off with my family situation, my boyfriend and I drove to our friend’s college for a long weekend to hang out there. It was a lot of fun; we went to the beach everyday and also did some shopping, which always makes everything a whole lot better. After that, we came back to my place and just hung out with my family. This break has made me realize how grateful I am to have such a strong and amazing family as well as such an amazing boyfriend.

I'm so jealous you got to sleep in your own comfy bed! My younger brother took my bed when I left because he is 6ft 2 and his feet hung off of his twin bed, so its understandable. I really wanted my friends to come visit Tampa and go to the beach but they all had to work so you are really lucky your friends got to come. Its so hard to believe that I haven’t been to the beach at all since this school year has started. Every time I make plans to go they never come through which sucks!

  32. To Amber myer,

I am sorry you were not able to go home, but I am happy you made the best out of your break! I heard st. Augustine is absolutely beautiful. I had originally been interested in Flagler college located there, because of its beautiful campus and surrounding town. However, I have never seen it in person, but am definitely going to try to get their sooner then later. Fudge is my absolute favorite chocolate, ever! Your day trips sound very interesting, not like something you would do on any given day. It sounds like you had a very eventful and fun spring break, and many people must be very jealous that you go to school in a place where people would love to spend their spring break.

  33. Over spring break I didn’t do anything fancy or anything. I only stayed in the general Tampa area over break. I went to a few beaches like the St. Pete beach where I went jet skiing with my boyfriend then went to something called The Point. I also visited the Ellenton mall and walked around and bought some different things. I spent some time with my family and went to go watch my nephew’s soccer game. I was really excited to go see because I never get time to go watch him play and his team won. I also went to Disney for a day which was really nice, we went to MGM Studios which is always interesting. It was my nephews first time there and he loved to see Woody and Buzz. There weren’t too many people that day which is always my favorite time to go. It was hard this spring break because all of my friends and family were still in school or work that week. Everyone had spring break the week after so I couldn’t really do anything big or go anywhere because everyone was busy. Overall it was an enjoyable week to just have time off from school.

It sounds like you had a wonderful spring break which is nice to hear. That is my kind of break, just to relax and enjoy the fresh air and nature. Also spending time with your family and eating anything other then UT food sounds lovely. Also we had such good weather that week so it was good that you were outside enjoying it and not indoors. I did almost the same thing you did, just relax, go outside and enjoy the time off. We all surely needed it before the end of the school year coming up.

  35. Over spring break, I definitely stayed in Florida. I went to the beach and Universal Islands of Adventure in Orlando with some friends. Our friend Stephen drove us, and it was scary because he doesn’t know how to drive. Apparently in Rhode Island, they drive around a circle to get their driver’s license.
At Universal, we drank butterbeer from the Harry Potter land ordeal. You can find some of the strangest people at an amusement park, I swear. So many people, who didn’t work at the park, dressed up in black cloaks in 85 degree weather, the sun beating down with crowds everywhere, and still kept their wands in hand. It made me happy.
Then I hung out with some family at my grandma’s retirement community in Bradenton. I was the youngest person at that bumpin’ community. Everyone went to bed at ten o’clock, and I stayed up for another four hours every night watching How I Met Your Mother and Animal Planet.

  36. Slupino, I’m glad to hear everything is ok now. That sounds like a scary start of your spring break, and I think it was wise of you to go to Jersey and support your family. It is a caring and selfless act to get up and go home immediately like that. The whole situation is better when the whole family is there for sure. It sounds like beyond that, you had some fun at your friend’s college and had fun hanging out with friends and family. That is awesome how your boyfriend surprised you too! Well I hope everything is still ok, and I’m glad to hear your break turned out to be good.

  37. Ashley,

It sounds like you had a really fun break filled with lots of family and celebration. I wish I could have seen my family during the break because even though my mom was here the first week of march it feels like it has been so long since I have seen any of them. I was also happy to do some road tripping myself during spring break! I was glad to stay in Florida because the weather was beautiful and like you I was able to go to the pool and beach :)

  38. Schowanec,

Your spring break sounds like it was awesome! I have always wanted to go to Universal Studios. I haven't even been to Orlando yet. What is butterbeer? Is that a Harry Potter thing? Diehard fans are something to be respected. To deal with that heat and humiliation of wearing a costume in public shows a real dedication to ones interests. Sorry to hear about the scary ride there though. Gladly you made it there and back in one piece.
Your hang session with your grandmother and family sounds like ti was a lot of fun. I too am a big fan of, How I Met Your Mother and Animal Planet in general.

You don’t always have to go do some ridiculous eventful activity for spring break to have a good time. I can completely relate with the way my spring break turned out. I had a family issue to attend to back at home as well; I absolutely needed to be there for it, so prices didn’t matter in my case. So for the majority of my time, I was either in the hospital, or with my boyfriend doing nothing special. I think that’s what is so great about good relationships though, and clearly you do as well. It’s nice to not have to actually do something to have fun. Sometimes those kinds of things can be more exciting to me than any type of elaborate plans. Anyway, hope you had a good time this weekend to balance everything out.

I am glad you enjoyed your spring break in the Orlando area, especially Disney World. I totally agree that the lines and expensive food there are overwhelming but it is true that disney is one of the happiest places on Earth. I am probably one person that could keep going to Disney World and never become sick of it. I also agree another day or two longer of break would have been fantastic. The daylight savings the last day of break definitely threw off the swing of things. Still a week later I am beyond tired and want that hour of sleep back.

  41. I definitely forgot about posting my blog - again. I am sorry about that Mr. Breckenridge. I'll hold to the claim that the medicine I was on after my surgery made me forget.

Over spring break, I did not really do anything interesting at all. I worked a lot, because my availability was very open with not having classes and all. As I mentioned in a previous post, I work at Busch Gardens as a photographer. My spring break consisted of, in short, standing around outside at Busch Gardens, wearing black pants and a yellow polo shirt, holding a stack of photo cards and a Nikon D40 camera, desperately trying to reach my card goal (that is the number of cards I must shoot - two or more photos per card, the card goes to the people I take the photos of, and we keep track of how many we give out), and constantly enduring the rude and otherwise completely uncaring individuals who make my job harder. However, there are always the really nice people who love to have their pictures taken and come to me asking for some. I like them a lot. Honestly, though, it's mostly me saying, "Hey guys! Get together for a quick photo! No obligations!" And them saying, "No thanks, I'm wanted by the F.B.I." (too bad you gave us your fingerprints to get through the turnstiles), "I don't show up on film." (we have lots of vampires attend Busch Gardens daily), "I don't want my wife to see me with her." (why'd you tell us then?), "We don't like each other." (that's a lot of money to spend on someone you don't even like). I survived this, especially since UT's spring break is different than the rest of Florida, and we weren't very crowded in the park that week at all. Honestly, this past week was much, much worse. I had to stay at work a lot later also, because we stayed opened longer to accommodate everyone else's spring breaks.

In other news, I got my wisdom teeth removed over spring break. It was the first surgery of my life, other than my birth by C-Section. If you want to know how it went, just know that I would never voluntarily go through anything like that again. That's about everything I did during my spring break.

  42. @Corey,

Butterbeer is a drink right out of the Harry Potter novels. The way they make it at Universal and other places (since they don't use alcohol) is by mixing cream soda with butterscotch syrup and topping it off with whipped cream, which is supposed to resemble the froth on real beer. I think they're eventually going to start selling it in alcoholic form too, because they could probably make a killing off of it. I'm kind of a die-hard Harry Potter fan also, I must admit. I dressed up like Hermione Granger from the books and went to see Harry Potter 7 Part 1 in the IMAX dome theater at MOSI. It was pretty awesome, and I had butterbeer there too. I still have yet to go see the Harry Potter section at Islands of Adventure, but I plan on going because Busch Gardens employees get in there for free. I just have to find the time to get a day off work and go!
